BEYOND NINE LIVES

Bill felt curiously uncomfortable as though

something was defi itely wrong. He ran

his hands over his suit. It was all right. He

tested his exhaust and control valves. His

helmet was floating buoyantly, taking the

stra from his harne s. He ha his t rch

and igniter.

No, nothing was wrong.

Joe pointed toward the dark hole in the

side. Bill crouched down and went through

it, whisking his lines after him, followed by

a silver green wake of bubble cones from

the b ck of h s helmet.

Joe wa smiling faintly, frozenly. He h lped

Bill’s lines get through the torn hull, using

great care that they did not foul. He stood

for some minutes outside, letting Bill’s

life-stream pass through his fingers.

He was savoring this. Here he had Bill’s

lines. Screwed into his belt he had a knife.

One slash and the broken hose would

bubble forth with the air intended for Bill’s

helmet.
